life, nature, winter

dormant

Winter’s not the favorite, is it? It’s a cold, austere reality.

A lot of us, though, we need the winter months. Like bulbs, or trees, we need a bit of cold. We need a dormant period. We need the winter.

I do a lot of fall photos. The changing leaves and autumn colors make a lovely picture. But honestly, I don’t like fall.

9/11.

Other sorrows.

Fall leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Like I’m trying my best to hold on to summer, and that’s not working. Like I’m not ready. I’m stubborn and refusing. Refusing to turn my head. Refusing what lies ahead, I suppose. Like a little kid who’s stubborn and refusing to take medicine. Mouth shut tight. The head jerks left, then right.

That’s how I engage with fall.

But winter to me is fresh. It’s snowed in and pulling on a heavy blanket. It’s sloppy clothes and old movies. It’s night-time, and it’s dark, and it’s sledding down a hill with nothing but worn-out bell-bottom jeans and a floppy piece of card-board between your butt and that cold frozen ground.

It’s necessary.

  1. Interesting thoughts about seasons. We do have all four here, and fall is my favorite. I have a strange theory, that whatever season we were born in is the one that will be our favorite time of year. I was born in the fall, one daughter was born in the winter, and it’s her favorite, another daughter was born in the summer, and it’s her favorite. Does that seem true with you, also? 🙂

    1. Well, I think I enjoy summer a lot, and I’m not ready to move onto fall. And I think the winter thing goes back to when I was a kid, and winter for me growing up was about going outside to play in the snow, building igloos in the front yard, and such. But I am definitely a 4-season type person. I feel like I need to go through the entire cycle.

  2. I love fall, but I’m OK with winter. It’s a good time to hole up and do creative stuff inside. Or just read and sleep. I actually find spring kind of tough. The sun is too bright and everything speeds up. I feel like a bear coming out of hibernation.

    1. It’s funny how we’re all different with the seasons. But I’m definitely good with the ‘hole up and do creative stuff’. I think in the hard part of winter the pressure is off for doing other more demanding things.
